The old saying ‘You Get What You Pay For!’ applies particularly to Cherries this week however, as Cherry supplies continue to increase, the prices are slowly easing. Cheaper Cherries are best suited to cooking a Cherry Jam or Chutney. 

Naturally sweet Victorian strawberries irresistible! Serve Strawberries dipped in melted chocolate or team with Mangoes for a healthy treat! 

Northern Territory Mangoes are impossible to resist. Mouth-watering Mangoes add sweetness to Summer Salads. Choose from Kensington Pride, Calypso and the R2E2 Mangoes. 

When it comes to Nectarines and Peaches this time of year, the tip is to make sure you allow the fruit to ripen to a slightly soft texture before consuming as this ensures the development of maximum flavour.

Fresh, ripe Apricots are juicy with a taste that is both sweet and a little tart. If unripe, place Apricots in a paper bag at room temperature for one to two days. Enjoy some really sweet-eating Queensland Pineapples from Fred’s in a Fruit Salad; and green juices. Pineapple chunks taste delightful in a Thai style Curry or a Sweet and Sour dish.

Cherry and Grape Tomatoes are plentiful and a thrifty buy! 

Have you tried the world’s smallest Tomatoes yet? Weighing in at around 1-2 grams. These miniature tomatoes named Tomberries are the size of a small blueberry and are red or yellow coloured with a sweet tomato flavour add the whole to salads or pasta dishes for a burst of flavour! 

As Australian grown Grapes are increasing in supply, so too does the sweetness of Grapes. Menindee and Flame Seedless are currently available. 

Put healthy Salads back on the family menu this week with extra crunchy Cos and Iceberg lettuce representing a thrifty buy this week. For a Salad Green with a peppery flavour, enjoy a bunch of Watercress. 

Sweet flavoured and low GI Kumara makes for some delicious roasting; Serve hot with roast Turkey or serve it cold in a Salad. With pumpkin prices up this year, Kumara adds colour and makes for a good alternative. 

Pick up a large bunch of Green Onions this week at Fred’s. Add Green Onions to Salads, Scrambled Eggs, Pasta dishes or Sandwich fillings for a delicate onion flavour. 

Crispy Bean Sprouts add crunch and flavour to all types of dishes. Choose firm white Bean Sprouts with small yellow tips. Rinse in cold water just prior to use. Toss Bean Sprouts through any stir-fry just before serving. 

Glossy purple-black skinned Eggplants have a subtle flavour. Delicious sautéed, baked, grilled or barbecued, or pan-fried, Eggplants absorb flavours so work well with flavours like Tomato, Garlic and Basil. 

Cucumbers are ideal for Salads, adding to Rice Paper Rolls or making your own home-made Tzatziki. Lebanese Cucumbers are refreshing, crunchy and are very good value. 

Fresh Asparagus is a WINNER for value, taste and versatility! The delicate nutty flavour of Asparagus can be enjoyed raw or cooked, hot or cold and Aussie Asparagus spears team deliciously with Pasta, Veal, Seafood, Chicken, Steak, and Prosciutto. 

Versatile Bok Choy is quick and easy to cook. Select bunches with crisp pastel cream stems and fresh-looking green leaves. 

A barbecue is never complete without Mushrooms. Flat Mushrooms (large open mushrooms) have a rich, intense flavour and meaty texture. Try barbecuing them with a dab of butter and crushed garlic. 

Zucchinis are a choice buy! Try slicing them in half lengthwise, score, then brush with a little olive oil and place on the barbecue or grill plate, cook turning once until tender. 

The clean, fresh flavour of Mint livens the taste of Sauces, Dressings, Boiled Potatoes and Salads.
