The festive season is upon us with juicy, flavoursome Cherries and Apricots. Choose firm, evenly coloured Apricots with a sweet fragrance as this indicates optimum flavour. It is best to refrigerate ripe fruit and use within 2 days
We have good supplies of juicy, flavoursome, Peaches and Nectarines.
Creamy Queensland Bananas are well-priced. Team them with tangy Passionfruit
Sweet and juicy Mangoes bring that lush tropical taste to your summer table. Mangoes are perfect on their own or in tempting chilled Summer Desserts. Ripen Mangoes at room temperature until the fruit yields to gentle pressure around the stem.
December is a great time for luscious Strawberries, Blueberries, Raspberries, Boysenberries, Blackberries
Watermelon is a family favourite especially during the hotter months. When selecting cut watermelon, choose pieces with a bright pink flesh. For a simple summer dessert, serve a platter of chilled juicy watermelon wedges, feta, olives and mint
Currently at their seasonal best, Tomatoes come in many shapes, colours and sizes. For maximum flavour, leave tomatoes in a cool place to fully ripen before using. Once ripe they can be stored in the fridge however, they are best served at room temperature
Sweet flavoured Kumara (aka Sweet Potaro) tastes divine when roasted and served hot with roast turkey or alternatively, when served cold in a salad such as Roast Kumara, Chickpea & Baby Spinach Salad
Sweetcorn is a family favourite that is fast to cook. Wash corn cobs, place in a single layer in a microwave-safe bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Microwave on high for 2-3 minutes (per cob) until just tender. Stand to cool for 5 minutes before serving. Sweetcorn is 80¢-$1 a cob.
Versatile Carrots is a bargain! Add grated carrots to coleslaw, juice carrots (they are delicious teamed with orange and ginger)
Summer is also a time to enjoy eggplants. There are so many ways to enjoy eggplant, roasted, grilled, barbecued or baked. Adding barbecued eggplant to home-made burgers adds texture and an extra smoky flavour
Celery is fabulous for adding crunch to Summer Salads and is well-priced this week
Broccolini is a top buy and is easy to cook
Tender, juicy Lebanese Cucumbers are a top buy! Combine diced Cucumber with ripe tomatoes, olives, thinly sliced onion and feta cheese to make a traditional Greek salad
Rosy-red radishes wee-priced. Trim leaves and gently scrub before using. For ultra-crisp radishes, place them in iced water for 30 minutes just prior to serving
